Playlist View

mp3ql Manual » Windows

Introduction

This view is used to create custom playlists which can be loaded into your mp3 player. It can be used as the sole interface to browse and organise your files by loading them into it and using the context menu as required. As with the Detail View you can organise files depending on columns, please refer to the topic list for more information.

Creating and removing Playlists

By default all playlists are created and stored in the mp3ql config directory, but another location can be specified in Preferences » Libraries » Storage Directories, multiple locations can be chosen, and clicking the 'active' box activates or deactivates them. Also by default a playlist is created called Library, as the name suggests an example use of this would be to load all of your albums into it, providing a simple way of moving files between playlists - If you wish to do this, instructions follow:

Instructions: From the Tree View select your chosen folder, enter the context menu and select (path/to) » playlists » Add To: Library, then wait for the operation to complete - a progress meter and an icon enabling you to cancel the operation will appear in the mp3ql status bar.

Create Playlist - To create a new playlist select the Storage or Library Icon (Storage Icon or Library Icon), and select Playlist » New Playlist

Remove Playlist - To remove, select the playlist and choose Cut.

Adding files to, and Removing files from a Playlist

It is important to distinguish the difference between adding a file to an mp3ql playlist and adding a file to a playlist via the player plugin controls; When you add file(s) to, or remove them from the mp3ql playlist window they will not automatically be added to your mp3player, to add them to your player you must first use the 'add' player control (Add to Playlist), futher information concerning this and the other player controls is available here.

Adding file(s) to a playlist - Select the file(s) you wish to add (from the Detail View, or a directory using the Tree View ), and then select (path/to)/playlists » Add To » yourplaylist. You can also drag and drop files into a playlist.

Removing file(s) from a playlist - To remove a file or a group of files select it (or them), and choose Cut.

Ratings

You can give your playlists ratings out of 10, depending on how much you like or dislike them. This option is available by selecting a playlist, and choosing Playlist » Rating » Your Rating (For Example: Full Rating).

Open/Close

The Open/Close options are located in the context menu and provide you with different ways to open the sub-directories of a playlist. These are the options:

  • Open Children
  • Close Children
  • Expand Recursive
  • Collapse Recursive

Open Children - This option will open ONLY the child directories of the currently selected parent directory. By child this means the immediate directory below the current (parent) one.

Close Children - This option closes open child directories.

Expand Recursive - This option will expand ALL directories below the currently selected parent directory. By recursive this means not only the immediate directories but also the directories within the immediate directories, and so on.

Collapse Recursive - This option closes all open directories.

Playlist Modes

There are currently two different playlist modes; Flat and Hierarchy. Both are available in the Right Click menu under Playlist, by default mp3ql uses the hierarchical mode.

Hierarchy - This will display albums in a directory like format, Playlist Name » Artist » Album » Files.

Flat - This will display the files in one list, Playlist Name » Files. It isn't possible to add files to a playlist when in flat mode, thereby acting as a lock.

Diff Playlists

This enables you to compare two different playlists, and outputs the differences to a third playlist.

Smart Playlists

A Smart Playlist is created and removed in exactly the same way as a a normal one (Read Creating and Removing Playlists for more information), the main difference is in functionality. The basic principle of a Smart Playlist is that it will automatically add files according to specified rules, when you create a Smart Playlist a dialog will appear which enables you to choose these rules, the top three elements are:

  • Rating
  • Play Count
  • Last Played

So, let's say you would like certain files to be automatically added to a playlist once you have played them three times; In this scenario you would check the Play Count checkbox, select equals and type 3. Next you decide how to sort these files and what size to limit the playlist to, if you check Apply to library in... this will scan your current playlist library and retrieve any files that adhere to your rules.
